Users run interactive **sessions** in which the AI queries the client database, retrieves metadata about the data model, and reports what it finds. The outputs are **findings** — query results given a title, a description, and an optional chart — which can be gathered into **presentations**, curated collections that assemble findings from across sessions into a coherent narrative. Sessions can be started directly from **Explorer**, or run within a **diagnostic** that defines the AI's system prompt, toolset, and sharing. An **opportunity scan** automates the whole arc — running a whole suite of diagnostics end to end and assembling the resulting findings into presentations. Where a presentation captures what the data said at a moment in time, an **app** is a small interactive application the AI writes and you publish, which queries the database afresh each time someone opens it. --- ## Getting Started Compass is available to users with Reviewer-level access (or higher) on Ursa Studio instances where the infrastructure for LLM use is properly enabled. Navigate to Compass from the main Ursa Studio application. The default landing page is [Explorer](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-explorer), a streamlined way to start an AI conversation immediately. The Compass interface has a collapsible sidebar for navigating between Explorer, the opportunity scan, diagnostics, objects, presentations, apps, configuration, and the data model, with main content areas for diagnostic details, session workspaces, and presentation and app views. Diagnostic definitions and suites are tabs on the diagnostics page; entities, articles, and the global prompts live under configuration. ### Appearance Compass renders in either **Light Mode** or **Dark Mode**. Light Mode is the default. The avatar button at the bottom of the sidebar opens a menu containing your name, **About Ursa Compass**, **My Account**, and **Log Out**. Choosing **My Account** opens a dialog with a **Presentation Mode** setting; switching it applies immediately, with no reload. This is the same **Presentation Mode** setting found on the My Account page in Ursa Studio, so changing it in Compass also changes the appearance of the Analytics Portal and Data Studio, and vice versa. The My Account dialog also has a **Model** setting, which controls the AI model Compass uses for the sessions you run. Each model in the list shows its accuracy and cost on an internal Ursa Health benchmark that simulates real-world scenarios. --- ## Contents 1. [Explorer](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-explorer) — Start an AI conversation immediately without creating a diagnostic first. 2. [Opportunity Scan](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-opportunity-scan) — Visual progress tracker and automated scan execution for cost-of-care investigations. 3. [Diagnostics](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-diagnostics) — Define the AI's behavior, tools, and sharing settings for investigation sessions. 4. [Diagnostic Definitions](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-diagnostic-definitions) — Reusable blueprints that capture diagnostic configuration and session structure. 5. [Diagnostic Suites](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-diagnostic-suites) — Named collections of definitions that group related diagnostics for use in opportunity scans. 6. [Sessions](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-sessions) — Run interactive AI conversations within a diagnostic. 7. [Findings](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-findings) — Query outputs with titles, descriptions, and optional chart visualizations. 8. [Presentations](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-presentations) — Curated collections of findings from across sessions and diagnostics. 9. [Apps](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-apps) — Interactive applications the AI writes over live data, published to the people you share them with. 10. [Entities](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-entities) — Organizations or partners that scope diagnostic investigations via automatic query filtering. 11. [Dispositions](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-dispositions) — Structured, machine-readable session conclusions with schema validation. 12. [Dependencies](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-dependencies) — Multi-stage workflows where downstream sessions build on upstream findings. 13. [Configuration](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-configuration) — Organization-wide prompt customizations for automated workflows and related customization. 14. [Articles](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-articles) — Reference documents in the knowledge base that the AI can consult during sessions. 15. [Objects](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-objects) — Tables and views the AI builds in the client database, along with their associated metadata. 16. [Data Model](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-data-model) — Browse the objects, measures, and diagnostic definitions in each analytics module, then drill into any one of them for a Lineage Health report: whether the last ETL run validated cleanly across everything upstream, and whether the data inside those objects is as recent as it is expected to be. 17. [Tools Reference](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-tools-reference) — Capabilities available to the AI during sessions. --- ## Access Control ### User Roles - **Authenticated users** can view sessions, presentations, and apps that have been shared with them. - **Reviewers** can also run AI conversations in Explorer and in the sessions of any diagnostic they have been made an editor of. They cannot create diagnostics, presentations, or apps, and cannot share anything with other users. - **Compass Authors** (and above) can create diagnostics, presentations, and apps, run AI conversations, and share their work. ### Sharing Diagnostics, presentations, apps, and scans support two levels of shared access: - **Editors** have the same rights as the owner: they can edit the diagnostic, presentation, app, or scan, manage sessions, run AI conversations, and add or remove other editors and viewers. Only Compass Author-level users (or higher) can be added as editors, except on diagnostics, where Reviewers can be editors too. A Reviewer editor can create and manage sessions, run AI conversations, and edit findings, but cannot edit the diagnostic itself or change who has access to it. - **Viewers** have read-only access to the diagnostic, presentation, or scan and all of its content. For an app, a viewer sees the most recently published version, not the owner's work in progress. Both individual users and **user groups** can be granted editor or viewer access. When a user group is added as an editor or viewer, all members of that group receive the corresponding access. The sharing dropdowns combine individual users and user groups under labeled headers. Scan-level sharing is additive with diagnostic-level and presentation-level sharing — sharing a scan grants access to all diagnostics and presentations created by that scan, without affecting any sharing configured directly on those diagnostics or presentations. Every change to who can view or edit a diagnostic, presentation, app, or scan is recorded. Reviewers can see these changes in Metadata Manager under Search Logs → Compass Grants. See [Diagnostics — Sharing](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-diagnostics#sharing), [Presentations — Sharing](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-presentations#sharing), [Apps — Sharing](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-apps#sharing), and [Opportunity Scan — Sharing](/v1/docs/product-manual-compass-opportunity-scan#sharing) for details. ### Setup and User Agreement For installation and configuration, see the [Compass Installation Instructions](https://docs.ursahealth.com/v1/docs/compass-installation-instructions). Use of Compass is governed by the [Ursa Compass User Agreement](https://www.ursahealth.com/ursa-compass-user-agreement), which is based on Ursa Health's [Use of AI Policy](https://www.ursahealth.com/use-of-ai-policy).
