    Denominator Description

    The elapsed time of active membership for plan members during the current reporting period in 1000s of member-years; also restricted to periods during which the patient was alive and had medical claims data coverage.

    Numerator Description

    The number of midnights elapsed between admission and discharge of a hospital inpatient encounter falling within the denominator period; NB: a single admission straddling multiple reporting periods will contribute (partial, prorated) LOS to each of those reporting periods.
