A physician specializing in nephrology, identified by the presence of a qualifying primary NUCC provider taxonomy code.

Purpose

Used in the URSA-CKD module to identify clinician office visits with nephrology providers, of which nephrologists are a subset.

Detailed narrative of logic

1. As implemented in Nephrologists and Nephrology Group Providers, providers in Providers— which includes both individual and organizational providers — are included if they have a qualifying primary NUCC provider taxonomy code (see value set NEPHROLOGY SPECIALTY) or if the provider description includes the words “nephrology” or “nephrologist.”
2. Records in Nephrologists and Nephrology Group Providers associated with individual nephrologists have the field Is Individual Provider = 1.
